APULIA TRAVEL GUIDE





The purpose of this blog is to introduce you to an ancient land, located in south of Italy, called Apulia.


I will show you Apulia thorough many pictures, but I can't describe either the fragrance of almond tree nor the flavour of our food.


I will try to lead you through Apulia secrets starting from Trullos (in which I live) and arriving to the yellow beach and the warm sea.

In order to know more about this place, now I will post some pics of most beautiful places in Apulia.

If you really want to discover Apulia, come along and I will be glad to show you my land, its fragrances and its flavours.

VIESTE



Vieste stands on the promontory of Gargano and is an enchanting town in wich you can visit the Cathedral, built on a Roman Temple and the castle, built by Frederik II, located on the hill.

TREMITI ISLANDS



 

Three enchanting islands are the pearl of  Apulian Adriatic Sea.
San Domino is strongli organised from the touristic point of wiew and has some grottoes, San Nicola houses the ruins of an ancient castle, and Caprara is famous tanks its very clear water and its marine and terrestrial fauna: you can find very strange and curious nice birds!


BARI

Old Town in Bari is a labirinth of small streets in wich are enclosed ancient artistic building and churches.

Castello Svevo is a conglomeration of Roman and Norman fortifications, topped off with 16th century towers.


St. Nicolas Basilica




Basilica of St. Nicolas is an important example of Romanesque architecture, it was built in the 11th-century.
In this Basilica are kept the bones of St.Nicolas.

MAJOR EVENTS

The "Fiera del Levante" is one of the main Italian trade fairs and the Mediterranean, based in Bari, specifically in the neighborhood Fesca-San Girolamo. The main entrance is on the seafront of Bari.
The main event is the "Campionaria in September" event which, in recent years, drew up to over one million visitors and, moreover, about two thousand exhibitors.

(City of Trullos)













Trullo is a traditional house with a conical roof.







Church of St.Antonio


This town hosts courios habitations with a conical roof made of grey stones and cylindrical walls with 2 meters of thickness. This shape is partly dued to economical condition of the time which forced the inabitants to build and pull down the roof of their homes whenever the king sent a control of buildings on his land.
In fact at the time it was forbidden to build withouth the permission of the king ( so poor people were obliged to build with this hard and difficult architecture to survive).

POLIGNANO A MARE



 


 
The oldest part of town lies on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Adriatic Sea.
Polignano a mare is characterized by high costs and sometimes jagged, on which are numerous outlet blades. One of them, Monachile Lama is the deep creek just west of the historic center, so called because in the past, there stood the presence of the monk seal.

Along the coast, there are many sea caves.

CASTELLANA GROTTE


 

It is primarily known for the complex karst caves of Castellana, one of the largest and most picturesque in Italy.
The famous caves of Castellana is located 1 km southwest of the town, they are of karst cavities and constitute a major tourist attraction in the area.
About five hundred meters from the town we find already the first discovered caves, bathed in an evocative atmosphere of mystery and folklore, many today are a destination for sightseeing and caving.

Locorotondo is a village in the province of Bari, of extraordinary beauty.


Locorotondo overlooking the Valle d'Itria as an island overlooking the sea.
Its form is circular and is located on a hill.
Its name means place round and is characterized by an ancient village of stone houses covered with white lime, which serves as protective from the sun.
Walking through the narrow streets and admire locorotondo sharp stone roofs, magnificent wrought iron balconies decorated with great accuracy with colorful flowers and breathe fresh air and clear air.

CASTEL DEL MONTE
(ANDRIA)


This mysterious castle, rising up completly isolated on an hill, was built by Frederick II of Swabia.

It's structure is gothic and it has an even octagonal design with eight towers in the esternal perimeter.
It is located in th countryside surrounding Andria.


TARANTO


Taranto was the most powerful of the ancient Greek colonies in Italy, during the II World War Fight has been a strategic naval harbour, and till now hosts part of italian naval fleet.
Taranto hosts the National Archeolocichal Museum of Magna Grecia, with a great collection of ancient arts.

GOVERNMENT HOUSE

Government building, located into the new district of the city, was built betwwen 1930 and 1934 on the ruins of Politeama Alhambra theatre, it was inaugurated by Duce Benito Mussolini, in front of the crowd of people.

PROVINCE OF TARANTO

MARTINA FRANCA
(City of festival and baroque art)

Martina Franca is the pearl of the province of Taranto. It was founded in the 10th century AD by refugees from Taranto, escaping from Saracen raids.
You can find very important evidences of baroque art in ancient buildings and churches like St.Matino.
The city is located at 431 m a.s.l , and at this altitude is possible to admire the Itria Valley with its trullos. In the manor farm Russoli, next Martina F., you an find an unique specimen of donkey.
This city hosts the famous Festival of Itria Valley and other cultural events like the Ghironda.

BRINDISI

Svedish Castle


Works of building began in 1227 under the emperor Federico II.
In 1488 the Castle was enlarged and fortified by Federico I king of Naples.

La Notte della Taranta is a festival of folk music of Salento, the pinches, which takes place in various municipalities of the province of Lecce and Salento Greece and has its climax in August.
